Critter watch continues.

I'm not sure what type of critters visit our yard in the night but in the mornings there are (apparently) some great smells out there.

Whatever it was that had wandered through, the scent must have been strong. They spent quite a bit of time the other morning checking that area out. (The little light brown thing by Breeze's back leg is an outside stuffie toy.  A fake critter)

At the back is where there is a bird's nest in the loose soffit on the neighbor's garage. Hiker gets very excited and will sit and whine because she can hear the baby birds chirping.

There are extra (old) fence boards there to discourage Hiker from digging.  As you can see, the lilies are hanging in, despite the activity.  For some reason, this is the only bird's nest that interests her.  We have at least two other nests but she spends hours (literally) laying here.

Later, at the woodpile -

I am sure there are some little critters living in the woodpile.  Every few days, the pack gets very excited about it

Here is our foster pup Twiggy sticking her head in between the chunks of wood.

They all did some deep sniffing and some pawing at the stacked wood.  It must have been stacked very well since it never moved, even with all those noses and feet at it.

Later that same day, Azule and Bill found something interesting in the grass.

Foster pup Twiggy decided to join them just in case they needed extra help.

They never did find anything but sure gave it a good try.

  1. Lordy they look like a fun bunch. I sure wish Ray could join in the sniff-fest.

    1. Oh, Ray would be able to teach them a thing or two about sniffing, wouldn't he?

  2. Peeps just don't understand all the activity that happens in OUR territory at night. We race out each morning and check out every inch. It's usually our front garden that needs careful sniffing.

Great work guys. We're curious as to what is living in your wood pile.

That is too funny. Sometimes Finn will slightly obsess over one spot also, and I wonder what has crossed in our yard overnight. I think it's deer or a cat. They are definitely funny sniffing around!

    1. I wonder too what has been there. We've seen rabbits and racoons in the yard and the ever popular earthworms!

  4. I can almost tell when a possum has visited and the exact path just watching Max's reaction! Love the last pix especially - super cute!

    1. In our yard, there is usually one or two blind ones that bump into another making me wonder if there was a few critters roaming around since all the dogs seem to be following a scent.

  5. my dogs don't seem to pay much attention to critters in the yard.... BUT I have had rats eating my mandarins, they leave completely clean mandarin skins on the ground. Mouse, the foster greyhound, knew there was something up in the mandarin tree at night. She used to stand under it and jump around. These are clever rats too, because my super hunting kitty hasn't managed to get them. I only let her outside when the rodent population gets high, but she hasn't caught any of them.

    1. Is that mandarins - mandarin oranges?! Right out there in your yard? I am SO jealous.

Do you think that the greyhounds would be hunters if they did get a hold of something? Our sweet, lovable, evreybody-wants-her, blind Hiker is a hunter/killer. People are shocked because she has the sweetest and most gentle personality.

  6. There are many rabbits who come into my yard at night to poop. I like to eat their poops. Yum. Tastes like grass and other good stuff. Do you think there is a chipmunk in that wood pile. That is my guess vexing little creatures. It is frustrating to have creatures take advantage of your nighttime slumber to party in the yard. Maybe someday you will be able to go out at night and meet some of them. Just watch out for those black and white things which are not cats and are very stinky.

    Kisses,
    Dexter

    1. Hey Dexter, you might be right about the chipmunk. The Mom found a couple of peanuts in the shell by the woodpile. (Hiker ate them) Mr. Bill encountered one of those black and white not-a-cat things one time. Very stinky!

  7. CSI - Canine Special Investigators, you have a good team there!
There were bunnies under the neighbors' blueberry bushes the other night, it was a good thing Maggie and Duke were on leashes. :)

    1. Interesting that you'd mention bunnies - I saw a little one this afternoon while playing ball with Callie (she didn't see it). I am now wondering if it is bunnies and birds that has captured Hiker's attention.

  8. If only they could sniff and tell! It would be fun to have a trail cam to see what goes on. :-)

  9. Wow, there's never THAT much of interest going on in my garden! Just the regular Squirrels doing their fence run and a few birds swooping in to see if they can get a worm before I notice them…

    Have fun,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  10. We had some chipmunks that would 'escape' to the woodpile. I always worry when the put their nose in there that something will bite it!
