Brook's eye

Years ago when Brook joined the pack, she was diagnosed with detached retinas, resulting in complete blindness.  At that time and at every visit to the opthamologist, the same warning, "It isn't IF her eyes need to be removed, it is WHEN."  All the warning signs were reviewed over and over again.  Yesterday one of those warning signs appeared.

For a couple of days, Brook's left eye appeared a bit red in the corner but she was likely tired at the times, so no concern. Then on Tuesday evening, Bill and her were running out the door (as usual) and Brook slid into the fence on her left side. Typical Brook, she got up and carried on. (she has bumped her head much harder numerous times) Wednesday morning, her left eye was full of blood.

Off to the vet.  Brook had blood taken and got lots of treats.

Surgery to remove her eye is scheduled for next Tuesday.  If all goes well during the removal of the left eye, her right eye will be removed at the same time. It makes more sense to remove it if possible since she can't see, there is really no need to keep it.

We'll keep you posted as to how things are going.

  1. Oh, dear - poor baby. Well, I'm sure she will handle it all with few if any problems; dogs are so good at taking things in stride :) Sending POTP her way...

  2. Oh, best wishes for Brook. I totally agree with liparifam; I bet the procedure will bother us more than her!

  3. I hope that all goes well... I had a dog with a serious eye issue once but we managed to avoid having it removed. Instead the surgeon made a "patch" from her inner eyelid tissue to cover the "defect" in her eye. Probably TMI... but I will be thinking of Brook and hoping that all goes smoothly and easily. I bet she'll handle it without a hitch!

  6. Oh poor thing! She probably won't even notice the difference, and it will be one less thing to worry about. I will be thinking of Brook and sending her healing wishes.

  7. Oh sweet pea! I hope everything is going okay. Having had a 3 legged dog, I know how adaptable they are. I'm sure she'll still have a full, wonderful life and get around just fine. She's so lucky to have you guys! Give her a little smooch on the head from Rita and me, please!

  8. That poor puppy! My heart goes out to its owner, who I must say it is obvious that there is a great level of love for this pet. A friend of mine with a blind dog told me that there's no need to worry about how they will do. Most dogs tend to live for the moment that is now.
