Hooves

In an attempt to keep the pack away from the recent painting projects, one day, they each received a special treat - a hoof.

Blind Brook had an interesting approach, shove it into the back of the old and decrepit chair.

Then she got down and tried a different angle.

Then finally fully stretched out on the floor.

(See the spot on each back leg, at her hock? Those are extra pads, similar to the pads on her feet)

After everyone has had a good chew on the hooves they leave them for a few hours and then one or two become the must have ones.  I haven't yet figured out what makes some better than others, silly me, I thought the hooves were all the same.

A couple of days after these pictures were taken, there was one hoof that was no more than one inch in size.  It was the one.  I had to laugh at Breeze and Forest. She had it and was chewing for a while then got up and walked towards the kitchen for a drink of water. Breeze was only four or five steps away from the hoof when Forest leaped off the couch and grabbed it.  Breeze heard him, turned and lunged for the hoof, just missing it.  She stood there for a few seconds then seemed to realize that it was gone for now so she went off and got a drink of water.

  1. Soo funny! One ACD is more than enough amusement; I just can't imagine 6of them!

I loooooooooooooove PEI!And have spent quite a bit of time up there, with my Mi'kmaq family. At onepoint I was thinking of retiring there.

I don't think I'll get that far north this summer, but I am hoping next summer.

Ontario is lovely, too. Although it's been years since I have been there. I do hope to travel through Canada in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Oh and we've been to and left Texas, already. We can almost see the Atlantic(tomorrow, maybe!) I'm sooooo behind! Between awful internet connections and blogger suckin' there's little hope that I will ever get caught up!

    1. Well then, pencil us in for next summer! : )

Since you're almost at the ocean, will Stumpy get to swim there? Some of the pack have swam in the ocean and a couple of them were a bit surprised when they tried to drink it!

    1. Only Brook and Azule do that. Since they look so much alike, it is like having twins when they both lay together on the floor like frogs!

  3. We usually have one bone that's better than the others.

    1. Maybe some day us humans will figure out what makes one better than the other. Happy chewing.

  4. I can only imagine all the hooves and other goodies you've gotten hidden under your couch from a pack of 7 dogs :P

    1. They don't usually stay under very long, somebody's nose finds them. For a few months after Breeze learned to get on the couch, she'd shove things down the back of the cushions and then "dig" them out. Happily, she doesn't do that very often now.

  5. It's funny how they all covet one in particular, isn't it? Delilah is the one who always wants what Sampson has. She stands over him and barks to let him know, he just ignores her.

I let them have hooves once but honestly their breath smelled so bad I couldn't stand it! LOL

    1. It's usually Breeze who is the intimidating one. Picture it - the blind puppy growling at the deaf dog....

  6. How funny! Poor Breeze! She should follow Ryder's example...

When everyone has a hoof, five minutes of happy chewing will commence. Then it starts...

Ryder comes over to me, crying. "Mooommmmm, someone stole my hoof!"

So either I or my daughter will go track down which collie now has two hooves. We will claim the hoof, and return it to Ryder. (and the whole thing will happen again.)

After about 30 minutes, we will notice Holly, Abby, Kori and Ryder are all hoof-less.

We will head into my bedroom, and there will be the puppy, Scarlett, with ALL the hooves tucked between her paws! :)

    1. Oh, I can relate to that! I've done the fair distribution thing many times too.

In our home, it is usually blind Hiker who takes all the hooves, antlers, etc into her crate. Since she is the one nobody challenges, she just hoards whatever she comes across.

  7. That's so funny - it's like little kids saying "ooooh, look what I have...it's sooooooo delicious...neener neener neener" and then the hoof wars begin!

    1. That is exactly what it is like. "But I had it first!" Geez. I always buy one for everybody but there are never enough!

  8. Hehehe! I like their treat styles! :-D Oh yes, us pups always know which are "The Best" treats of all...I do that with my cousin all the time (and even sometimes with my brother cats)! Hehe!

    1. Silly pups! As long as everyone gets a turn chewing, that is what matters. I always say that you have to share!

Yes, that's how it goes around here, too. One antler is THE antler, one hoof is THE hoof. The dogs go back and forth chewing on them!

    That's a funny story though!

    1. Us humans just don't seem to understand what the special thing about THAT one is. I often wonder if it is the fact that somebody else has it or has it got better flavor because of it being slobbered on?

  10. Haha, Star LOVES chew hooves. Probably because they smell absolutely horrifying. When she loses interest in a hoof fragment, I fill it with peanut butter and freeze it and that re-ignites her interest :)

    1. Geez, Star loses interest in a fragment? The pack likes those small chunks the best. That is a great idea though, to stuff it with peanut butter.

  11. That's very creative, Brook! I can see Wrigs doing something like that. He often presses his toys against things. Those extra pads are interesting--don't think I've ever seen that. I love the stories about the interactions among your pack. Makes me remember how fun it was when we had multiple dogs (and realize that I miss that).

    1. So, maybe time for a buddy for Wrigs? There are times, I will admit, when I recall with great fondness, the days of only one dog. I'd not change the pack for anything but with only one or two dogs you're not so limited. But, my pack is the best!!
