Attacked by a robin

Yesterday, Breeze was outside in the yard, wandering around and enjoying the sunshine.  I could hear birds chirping and squawking as usual and thought nothing of it. I went to check on her (as I always do, just because I worry more than I really need to!) and saw that she had found something in the grass.  Oops!

There are no photos of Breeze and the baby robin together since I was too concerned with saving the poor little thing.  When I walked outside, Breeze was literally pouncing in the area she knew it was.  It was funny watching her stand and tilt her head trying to determine exactly where it was.  Luckily, she missed and didn't actually land on it.    I took the above photo the next day.

So, later the next day, I was cutting the grass when the little baby robin fluttered out of the flower garden.  I immediately shut off the mower with the intent of moving the little thing.  Well, that's when Momma/Poppa (?) robin swooped in and actually brushed my back as I was leaning over.  Yikes! These robins are very protective of their babies.  I never expected to be attacked by a robin!

We seem to be having a "winged" theme this week.  Late on Wednesday night I had the couch to myself (a rare treat) and I saw something fly past with the cat Elsie in hot pursuit. My first thought was that it was a large moth but it seemed too big for a moth so I got up to investigate.  Nope, not a moth.

Yes, that is a bat.  In our livingroom.

It was carefully removed to the outdoors much to the disappointment of Elsie and Gerrard.

Elsie:  "I almost had it!"

Gerrard: "We never get to do anything fun."

  2. Poor little bat!

We're glad that little robin still have parents around to protect it. Sorry, they misunderstood you. Bet Breeze did look funny, trying to find it.

    1. Breeze did look funny with her long legs trying to pounce. Pictures and video would have been great but not worth having the baby robin getting hurt.

OMD I would have flipped out with the bat. Like flipped. Hope the winged creatures leave you alone for a while now!

    1. Initially I was a bit freaked only because I was worried about getting it out unharmed. It was actually easier than I thought it would be.

  5. Love the robin story! I'm glad Breeze didn't land on the baby. So happy to hear you were able to move the little bat outdoors. They are wonderful little creatures.

    1. That's typical Breeze, if it makes noise and moves, we gotta play! I'm just glad she didn't notice the bat.

  7. I've had to get some young robins out of my yard in a hurry too! Apparently they live on the ground for a few days when they leave the nest, and mom and dad just bring them food there. A great strategy as long as no Fozzies are around!

    I love bats too.

  8. Oh my gosh - an attack robin! And how cool is that to have a bat in the house??? Oh my goodness - I would have loved that! Glad he made it back outside safely. Sorry kitties - no bat stew for you! ;)

  9. OMG I would freak out, both with the birds attacking me and the bat in the house. That stuff literally makes the hair on my body stand on end. :-(

Wow, you are a WAY braver person than I am! Whenever Riley gets a bird in the yard (or any other small animal), I always make my dad come take care of it! I'm always afraid that maybe it isn't completely dead (and a few times when she's gotten birds, they aren't) and that if I pick it up, it's going to start moving in my hands and that just freaks me out for some reason!! I have no idea why! I don't even like picking them up with a shovel either...if they moved or something, I would freak out.

Oh, and I sure as heck wouldn't be getting any bat out of my house! I would just have to vacate the premises...for life!! ;)

Too bad Elsie and Gerrard didn't get to take care of the bat situation...haha!
