Azule has to wear a cone. There was an incident, prior to the puppy invasion, where she and a couple of the pack reacted negatively to all the posturing and growling that our foster Twiggy has been doing. Never, ever have any of the pack, other than Callie years ago, started a fight. Twiggy was acting all stressed and I didn't react quick enough to remove her from the situation and as a result, Azule's ear was damaged. It didn't look too bad initially but the next day as I was cleaning it again, I could see the cartilage exposed across the base of her ear.
Before our vet visit, we had a bit of time so we stopped at a park for a little wander. Azule spotted some ducks in the water. (they are near the middle of the picture...trust me, they are there!)
At the vet's, Azule was calm and had little reaction to the shaver as I held her. That's one advantage of being deaf! She has numerous punctures around her ear and a significant tear across the base of her ear. The vet was able to put two staples in to hold it together and still allow for an open space for any infection to drain. Then Azule got the cone to wear. Which got me to thinking that she might enjoy a cone to eat.
I'm not sure what the sideways angle is all about here but she sure enjoyed the ice cream!
Once we were back home, she seemed to be feeling a bit sorry for herself and almost looked like she was pouting a bit.
|"Gotta wear a cone. Can't play in a cone."|
It's been about two weeks since this happened and Azule's ear is healing. Initially we were told that she might need surgery to close the gap but since it is healing so well, we'll continue with the cone and wait.
Azule has discovered that she can indeed play in a cone and can also chase butterflies, chew hooves and antlers too!
You may have noticed that there has been a lack of postings lately. There has been an unfortunate and extremely stressful situation that I am dealing with and therefore haven't really felt up to posting. I wrote this post about Azule's ear a couple of days after it happened and am just now getting back to posting. Rest assured, all of us are healthy and will remain together. That's all I can say for now. Thanks for sticking with us!
I hope you are ok, if you need to talk, I'm here.ReplyDelete
Want to hear something funny? One of the collies is currently in a cone too! Holly injured her toe somehow. And began licking it constantly, which made it worse. Now she has to soak her foot a couple times a day, and wear a cone! (Which she abhors!)
And she wants to know why she didn't get an ice cream cone too!Delete
I know that the ice cream cone was more to make me feel better! How do you soak Holly's foot? A sit-stay? Note to Holly - look really sad in your cone and maybe, just maybe they'll take you out for an ice cream cone.Delete
It requires one of us to sit next to her, holding onto her collar, while offering lots of words of sympathy! lolDelete
The ice cream cone is the best kind. Glad the ear is healing.ReplyDelete
We tried playing with a dog in a cone once, but it kept bashing into us and we didn't like it.
XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy
I get bashed constantly with the cone because Azule is a champion cuddler. She is very laid back and adapted really well to the cone. The noise of her trying to scratch is very annoying though!Delete
Hi there acd6pack and your Mom, hope things are looking up for you now. We are of course always here for support.ReplyDelete
I have been lucky never to have to wear a cone. I once had an ouchie on my face from having something called an 'abscess' apparently, they took it out and it was ouchie, but I didn't have no cone. Melon's chiming in that she doesn't know why but she's never heard of a guinea pig in a cone. Phew!
Much sympathy to Azule - but she sure deserved the YUMMY cone she got! And we are glad she has discovered she can still play in a cone.
Cocoa, I don't think that there would be a cone small enough for you!Delete
We sent you an e-mail.
Good wishes to you all.ReplyDelete
The next time Silas needs to be in a cone, we're going to have to get a prescription of doggie anti-anxiety meds. He panicked with his post-neutering cone. Fortunately I was able to go without it, since he wasn't big on licking his incision. It looks like Azule is handling it much better.
After her initial pouting, she has adapted amazingly well. It's a little bit amusing when she tries to chew something and it's under the cone. Yes, I feel sorry for her and help!Delete
That is the cutest technique for eating an ice cream cone I have ever seen! I love the head tilt :) I am glad Azule is feeling better.ReplyDelete
I certainly hope all is well with you and your pack! Tail wags to you all!
It was the first time that Azule had ever had ice cream and I think that wearing the cone confused her a bit but the excitement of ice cream won, therefore the head tilt!Delete
It's no fun when stressful times make an appearance in our lives, I hope that you are all doing well and that everything gets back to normal for you again soon. I love the ice cream photos, Azule is such a beauty.ReplyDelete
Thanks. I think we'll be dealing with a new normal.Delete
I wish I could have captured Azule biting the ice cream, if she had her way, one gulp and it would have been gone!
The pictures of her eating ice cream with the cone are too much! I hope she heals quickly:)ReplyDelete
It's getting better and since we are no longer facing a surgery, I am happy.Delete
Howdy Mates, we're sorry things have been stressy lately. We have paws crossed everything will settle for you all. Sorry too about Azule's injury. Looks like she doesn't mind the cone and loves the other cone! Take care everybuddy. No worries, and love, Stella and RoryReplyDelete
Azule enjoyed the ice cream cone so much that I felt a bit guilty for not taking her out for one last summer! Thanks for crossing those paws for us, we sure need it.Delete
We hope Azules' ear is healing nicely and that your stressful situation is under control. Have a super Saturday.ReplyDelete
Best wishes Molly
Hi Molly! Our vet says that Azule's ear is healing well and hopefully only a couple more weeks of the cone.Delete
Oh, the enjoying the cone while in the cone pics are so sweet! I'm sorry to hear about the ear incident and sorrier to hear about the stressful situation. Hope it's getting sorted out.ReplyDelete
The pics of the pups in the previous posts are precious. (Sometimes I get carried away with alliteration.)
Hope you are all hanging in there! Stressful situations are not fun. :\
Thanks, we're hanging in there, some days are tough but I'm trying to not let it get to me since the pack quickly reacts to my mood.Delete
Ah...the puppies! So gosh darn cute!
I hope that Azule is healing and that life is becoming less stressful for you. It was so sweet that you got her an ice cream cone!ReplyDelete
Thanks KB for your thoughts. We're dealing with things and seriously considering another ice cream cone. Not a great solution but a nice diversion!Delete
Sorry about your stressful situation - been there :( Don't ever hesitate to reach out - Always willing to help in any way I can. Hate the cones! Josey had one recently after surgery and had bruises all over my legs from her running into me with it :(ReplyDelete
Thanks for your offer of assistance...got a crystal ball I can borrow? : )Delete
I am finding that the worst part of the cone is when Azule wants to snuggle. She is a major snuggly girl and likes to lay near my face. I've got bruises on my legs too but those are from Breeze standing on my legs!
So sorry to hear that you've been dealing with a difficult and stressful situation!ReplyDelete
Glad to hear that Azule is healing well and has figured out how to do all sorts of fun stuff in spite of the cone. When Wrigs wore one after his eye surgery, he was quite depressed the entire time--he hated that thing.
Hope things are looking brighter for you now!
Susan and Wrigs
Azule is very much like Hiker. Both of them are just about bomb-proof. It takes a lot to get them upset, so adapting to the cone was easy for Azule. Bill reacted similar to Wrigs when he had to wear a cone. Life was about over at that point!Delete
Oh dear, I'm way behind. I hope Azule is on the mend and your situation has eased.ReplyDelete
