We need a bigger sofa.

With multiple dogs, one thing people wonder is, "are they all in the house?".  Yes, they are.  I am a firm believer in dogs being a part of the family.  If I wanted a yard ornament, I'd get a garden gnome or a plastic pink flamingo.

When the dogs are in the house they tend to lay on the sofa.  Sounds cute and cozy until you see this:

See what is missing here?  There is no spot for the human to sit! With some very careful rearranging, a spot becomes available.  A very small space.

Sometimes it's only one or two who takes over the sofa.  Here is Breeze enjoying the space. With Bill on the end of the sofa.

We have a couple of gates in the house to prevent dogs from getting in to certain areas. Those with cats will understand.  I just have to share with you a brilliant idea I saw on the internet.  Rather than a traditional baby gate, re-purpose a baby crib!  I was able to get one for free.  A set of hinges and a hook and eye closure...a much nicer looking gate.  Just enough space at the bottom for the cats to get through.

  1. Love the baby crib idea!
As for the couch, I wanted a long, narrow one (we have a long, narrow room) so started looking at estate sales and on craigslist. I found an OLD nine-foot-long one for 50 bucks and refurbished it. It turns out to be the perfect thing. Ray can curl at one end and I still have enough room to stretch out fully (I'm 5'4"). Then the cats sit on the other end are far enough away from the dog that they aren't afraid. I figure with a 9-footer, you MIGHT get more than 6 inches to yourself. I stress the MIGHT. You also might just get more dogs cramming themselves up there.

    1. I would love a nine foot long couch! You're right though, it'd just be room for ALL of them, especially the way Breeze likes to stretch out.

  2. Brilliant idea with the crib! I love how they all crash together on the couch! It's actually really sweet - minus the part about you not fitting on there! ;)

    Welcome to blogging!

I see why you said Breeze looks like Silas. Where on earth do they get those ears? Although I suspect she's bigger (or will be), from those feet.

    1. I think that Silas could be her little brother. Breeze is now almost 40 pounds at 5 1/2 months old. She's getting so big, so fast! I always laugh and think that Breeze got big ears since her eyes don't work.

  5. Welcome to the Blog Pack!! Just stopping by from Blueberry's to see your beautiful pack. I too, think you need a bigger couch. That crib idea is awesome. I am looking for a couple baby crib mattresses to use as dog beds for my girlz. Just gotta hit the used "kids" stores (for the mattress, not a kid :)
Welcome and stop by mygirlzgotpaws(dot)blogspot(dot)com sometime :)

    1. I'll be sure and check out your blog! I too thought of using crib mattresses for dog beds but just don't have the space right now. (I got the used crib off Kijiji)

  7. Hello! I had to laugh, because your couch looks all too familiar! Right now we are involved with showing dogs. But I am a rescuer at heart, my first two dogs were rescues, and I will one day return to rescuing. We have a house full of collies, but I think ACDs are beautiful. (and yay, another herding breed!) I look forward to learning more about you and your dogs. :)

    1. Oh yes, she certainly is. My next post will have a bit more about her. When I saw her photo on the blind deaf shelter dog website with a PTS date...well, I just had to save her.

  12. Well hello there Cattle Dog crowd! :-D My name is Freckles and I'm visiting thanks to the lovely Blueberry! Your pack seems awesome and I can't wait to see what you are all up to in the coming days!

That was a great idea with the crib, my Domeek bought a couple of the pre-fab gates (I have kitty brothers too), but that would have been far more ingenious and cheaper!!

    Hey ACD6Pack, Jet here.

Nice to make your acquaintance. Blueberry sent us over to welcome you to the pack!

When we saw the gate, we took a pause, what a smart idea!! Mom agrees with your humans, she waited so very long to share her life with K9s that she expects us to live inside and on the furniture. (well, most of the furniture...) Last winter? I posted about how we leave a teensy space for Mom in her bed, describing the preferred locations of the 2 K9s/2 felines. This year, we'll have a smidge more room sadly, as our sweet Fluffy crossed OTRB.

Thank you for rescuing so many special needs K9s. We look forward to learning about your 6 pack.

What a great idea for a dog gate! We may have to do that in the future. We have 3 dog gates up and no cats!! Are we crazy or what??

    Have a great weekend!

  17. OMG--a cattle dog blog! I am happy to have found you, as I have a special place in my heart for those little troublemakers. Haven't had one in way too long since my Tashi passed away, but I am certain I will again someday, if only to foster :)

  18. I have two sofas; I'll be on one, then all three dogs will crowd me out, so I move to the other one - so do they, of course! There's no winning. Which is why I spend a LOT of time on my king size bed - plenty of room for all...
