Wallpaper and paint

Sometimes there are projects around the house that the dogs are not allowed to "help" with due to the location.  A few days ago I was tackling the closet in the bedroom where the litter box is, so no dogs allowed. We live in a very old house and the plaster in the closet was cracked and in places, the lathe was exposed.  So, to make it look nicer, I decided to remove the remaining tattered wallpaper and apply new.

Elsie checking the progress

I removed, in some places, four layers of wallpaper. One small section had this as the second layer.  I can't help but wonder how old it is and who applied it.

When we moved in to this house, there was some old and dirty carpet that was removed from all the bedrooms and under the carpet were layers of newspapers from 1943.  The carpet removal took much longer than it should have once those were discovered. Very interesting reading material with all the information on the war and the war related advertisements.  Just for fun, when  a few of the living room floor boards were lifted to be leveled, some of the old newspapers along with a couple of local current ones were placed under the boards for someone to find some day.

Back at the closet...when I set the wall paper water tray down, Elsie was very interested in it and playing with the water.

Then along came Gerrard to join the fun.

Checking the almost finished project

Our painting projects are (finally!) nearing completion. I saved the white painting until last so that is what we've been doing the past few days. As per usual, almost all the dogs were very interested in the latest project.  Callie was securely behind the gate in her room and Hiker was snuggled in her (doorless) crate with a freshly laundered sleeping bag. So, that left five to supervise the painting.

Breeze and Forest

Yes, that is paint on Breeze's ear.

Brook, Bill and Breeze

Yes, that is paint on Brook's ear. (just in case you noticed, Brook's eye is gray/silver due to the detached retina)

Of course, Bill had paint on his ear too.

As did Azule.

These are the freshly painted spindles.  Fresh and wet paint.  For some reason, all the dogs tend to walk on that side of the hall and always brush against the spindles.

Since they all ended up with paint on their ears, I think they may have been trying to starting a special club or something.

  1. Our aunties house is very old and when she was painting one of the bedrooms they found an area usually hidden by curtains that had the signatures of past painters with dates going back many years. They just added their own.

Old houses are so interesting...if lots of work. Love all the dogs with paint on the ears.

    1. When we wallpapered the hall, Hiker and Brook walked on the back of the paper with dirty feet so I wrote a note on the wall about it. I always think of things like that and the painter's signatures as a mini time capsule.

    1. You are so right and that comment made me laugh. Thanks for the humor on night shift! But seriously, it does make me wonder sometimes what they plan when left at home alone....

  4. Kat's comment really made me laugh out loud. People are so clever.
Having just gone through all that renovation stuff here, I can so relate to the painted animal look. But here it wasn't the blind dog but the black cat that turned out to be the real problem ( http://www.raytheblinddog.com/2012/03/you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me.html). Love the photos of renovations and all the help you were getting!

    1. Ha ha ha, after reading about your adventures, I think a bit of paint on an ear is nothing! The main problem I have is the three blind ones almost walking into the paint tray and/or sticking their noses in it to "see" what it is, which prompts me to frantically repeat, "No, no, no!! You can't eat it!"

    2. OMG that is so funny. That happened week before last when I was painting the inside of one of the closets here. I had an open bucket of paint but was using a tray and wasn't really paying attention to the bucket so I'm not sure exactly what happened. But there was a noise and when I looked over, there was Ray standing still with a big sloop of paint across his snout and one splort right on the end of his nose. I saw that tongue come out and screamed "Don't lick it!" Scared Ray into immobility for a moment so I grabbed his collar and dragged him to the bathroom, the whole time repeating "don't lick it, don't lick it, don't lick it, don't lick it." Like he'd know what I was talking about. I was able to wash it off before he could ingest much of it. Painting is such an adventure around here. Thank God I'm almost done.

  5. Howdy Mates, we loved Kat's comment too! It made us laugh. Loved all your photos. Old homes and their renovations are so exciting. When we had cement paths and our carport floor cemented everybuddy wrote their names and the date so we reckon it will be there for quite a while too. Take care. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

    1. I do enjoy the old house renovations, you just never know what you might find! (no great treasures yet though) I'm thinking of making a little time capsule and putting in the space behind the lathe in one of the bedrooms before finishing the wall repair. Just for fun.

  6. It's a new way of identifying your pet. :-) I don't know what it is about wet paint that attracts our pets!

    1. Every time this happens I wonder why I don't choose a paint color that would match their fur! Although, Breeze is white and the white paint still shows. Oh well, it's worth it to have their "help".

    1. We're getting there. Next is the dark paint on the railing now that those darn spindles are done. No doubt the happy crew will be willing helpers again!

So hilarious that they all have "painters ear"!!

    1. Finding the old newspapers was, in my opinion, really, really interesting so I like to think that someday there might be someone else who thinks finding stuff would be fun.

  9. That's so cute! It must be so difficult to complete projects like this when you have a house full of animals! Love that you left newspapers under the floorboards as kind of a time capsule.

    1. It can be a bit of a challenge, but it is just how we do things. I have had friends ask why the dogs aren't put outside or crated. Well, they don't want to stay outside and miss anything interesting! Come on, this is exciting stuff!! At least, that's the impression they give.

  10. The old newspaper thing is amazing and I'm glad you're continuing the tradition. And getting projects done with the pack around sounds like fun!
