What's for breakfast?

At our home, we've learned over the years that the best way to ensure the safety of the kibbles is to keep them in a securely latched tote.  This is because Brook has, on more than one occasion, grabbed a bag of kibbles and ripped into it and ate and ate and ate.  There were a couple of scary bloat incidents as a result.  After the first time, I purchased a snap lid type tote. That worked for a few days until Brook chewed the lid and got it off.  Out  came the bag of kibbles. Then a twenty pound weight on the lid. She knocked it off, opened the tote and ate the kibbles again.

So we now have, as part of our kitchen "decor", a tote with two metal latches to keep the kibbles and Brook safe.  Sometimes, the opening of that tote creates more interest than other times.

Twiggy and Brook

Of course, it was the two highly food motivated/obsessed ones that were interested.

Twiggy spotted a piece of kibble on the bottom of the tote, so in she climbed.

Twiggy: "I'm going in!"

Brook missed the piece of kibble but decided to get in the tote and check in case there was any more.

"I could chew a hole in the bag."

The bag is 30 pounds of kibble which last us just over two weeks. (Breeze and foster Twiggy are eating puppy kibbles) This shows how small Brook is.  When Forest was six months old, they were the same size.

"Where's my breakfast?"

I am still adding a little peanut butter gravy (1/2 tsp natural organic peanut butter and 1 tbsp hot water) to Breeze's kibbles and it seems to make meal times much more enjoyable for her.  No more growling or pacing while she is eating.  Yesterday, I added sweet potato instead.  She was not impressed.  We're staying with the peanut butter gravy.

  1. Hehehe, your pups sound exactly like my brothers (kitty)!! Domeek has to either hide the food in a locked hall closet or put it immediately in a latched tote!! Ginger has, on many many occasions, eaten through an entire bag of kibble (PIG!)! ;-) Good job for trying to figure out how to save, not only the food, but also Brook!! Happy Mother's Day!

    1. It still surprises me how Brook drags a bag of kibble that weighs about the same as her, out of a tote and then across the kitchen. I would have liked to seen it!

  2. Ours is in a container like that AND in the cupboard, so we can't get it.

Might have to try that PB gravy on our kibble.

    1. You gotta try the PB gravy! All the others eat very well and I have never ever considered adding anything to kibbles until now. (maybe I am getting soft?)

    1. A baby gate?! I wish! We have re-purposed a baby crib and use the ends as gates which have just enough space for the cats to get under. Ya, the cats and a determined blind and partly deaf ACD who can smell food a half mile away! She squished herself under. Got stuck a couple of times too.

  5. Don't have a problem with the boys wanting to eat all the kibble - but we keep their food in a tote in the cupboard - mainly cause I don't like the smell of it. They have allergies so can only have fish based food and although they love it - it stinks !.

    1. I know what you mean. Fish based is stinky! We're fortunate that nobody has any allergies and they all eat the same kibbles.

    1. Hello! Thanks for your kind words. Do you like to snuggle with dogs? Our cats do sometimes. Only sometimes though!

  8. Tell Brook that Wrigs's appetite doesn't have an off switch either! If he ever loses his appetite, I'll truly be alarmed. Glad to hear Breeze loves her peanut butter gravy. Isn't it amazing how little it takes to make them happy? :-)

    1. How true. I am the same way. If Brook doesn't eat, we'll be going immediately to the vet! It's funny to watch the different eating habits, from super slow and leisurely (Hiker) to almost panic-driven inhalation (Brook).

    1. I never thought I would be one to add something to kibbles. Dry kibbles. That's it. Eat it or not. I think I am getting soft! : )

  10. Peanut butter gravy--what a great idea! We tend to have bits of kibble scattered about from the various feeder toys, but having a food motivated foster dog helps with that problem! I haven't had a really food motivated dog in a while, but I would imagine that bloat is a real concern! You sound very much on top of it :)

    1. We have a couple of food motivated (obsessed?) in the pack and have to be aware of leaving things within reach. Never, ever leave groceries unattended!

  11. The peanut butter gravy sounds great, I may have to try that with a few of my guys that abandon their dish more often than not :-)

    1. I decided to try the peanut butter since I knew Breeze liked it and because we always have the natural organic. That is one of about three things we never, ever are without!

By the way, have you got anything to munch? I'm hungry.
